We have lived on ranches.
We met and married in a beautiful valley in a place called Clark, north of Steamboat Springs, CO. Michael had grown up visiting and helping his grandparents on their ranch in NE New Mexico. Dawn grew up outside of Cleveland. After college, we both found ourselves on a guest ranch called The Home Ranch. And from there, our adventure began. Michael moved on to a cattle ranch in Clark and we got married. Both of us had had dreams of joining The Peace Corps and we loved our time in Ecuador where we were able to spend 7 months, before finding out we were happily expecting Aidan.
We returned to Colorado and after Aidan was born Spring Creek Ranch, south of Kremmling, was our next stop. We were blessed with Ruth and Cole over the next 6 years on this beautiful ranch, as it transitioned from a single-family-owned ranch to Shadow Creek Ranch.
In the spring of 2003, Michael took a job on The Nature Conservancy’s Matador Ranch grass bank south of Malta, Montana. Michael worked with a group of successful neighboring ranchers and learned a lot by seeing each one’s different approach.
In December of 2004, we made the difficult decision to leave Montana and follow Michael’s ranching roots to New Mexico. Another blessing called Eli came to us there. Michael worked for The Quivira Coalition on their Valle Grande Ranch Grassbank.
Living on the 88,000 acre Chico Basin Ranch southeast of Colorado Springs beginning in 2007, we immersed our family in a ranching culture that includes working cattle horseback with long days in the saddle, branding camps, and hard work. Only an hour from Colorado Springs, we also had some of the benefits that a city can provide.
We have felt led by God each step of the way through this amazing journey. Our kids have had great experiences in their lives. Now they are growing up and starting to move on. In 2015, we returned to a place that has seemed like home for us together, Clark. Michael went back to work at the Home Ranch as Ranching Operations Manager and we loved being able to perform at the ranch for the guests every week. In 2019, the ranch sold. It is now a cattle ranch and Michael is General Manager.
Our music is so important to us. We have not always kept it burning brightly, but we have tried to keep it alive, performing when we can. We have played at cowboy poetry gatherings and other events, but some of our favorite times have been around a campfire or in a friend's living room. We feel so blessed to be able to share the gifts God has given to us in our music.
